It's very easy to add your own personal research to the FryGenWiki and we highly encourage it.

Advantages include:

  • Each user has their own namespace to include their own research.
  • The information you add will become instantly searchable by other users of this wiki and by all major search engines.
  • Your information can be sub-divided into logical sections within your own namespace making navigation and management of your information far easier.
  • Other users can freely discuss your contributions and provide help and assistance through the automatically generated discussion pages attached to each page you create.

How to access your personal namespace

When you are logged into this wiki you will see some new links appear at the top right of the page. One of these links is formatted as follows:

Clicking on this link takes you to your own personal namespace area of the wiki where you can begin to add your own content.

Formatting your personal namespace

Consistency is important as it benefits all users of this wiki and makes finding, managing and organising information far easier. This page therefore forms part of the FryGenWiki Guidelines which we ask all users to follow.

Adding a personal profile

If you want to add a personal profile about yourself and your research then this is best added to your personal namespace page. From there you can then add links to your other personal namespace sub-pages.

Adding sub-pages

Within a user's namespace it's possible to have unlimited sub-pages, each containing subject specific information. The example we are going to use here relates to adding a surname list.

Navigate to your own personal namespace following the instructions above then add /Surnames to the end of the URL in your browser's address bar and click enter on your keyboard. This creates a sub-page in your own namespace called Surnames at http://wiki.fry-family.org/User:YourUserName/Surnames

From here you can add a list of surnames which you are researching and other information related to them such as:

Fry - Chippenham, Wiltshire, England
Syms - Kingston upon Hull, England
Fletcher - Lincolnshire

or using wiki markup such as:

== Fry ==
Chippenham, Wiltshire, England

Information you add to your surname list can then be linked to more sub-pages very easily using more wiki markup or to general FryGenWiki pages.

== [[User:YourUserName/Surnames/Fry|Fry]] ==
[[Chippenham]], [[Wiltshire]], [[England]]

You can link to an individual from your surname list as follows:

http://wiki.fry-family.org/User:YourUserName/Surnames/Fry/Jonathan_Fry/b1969

This link would create a page relating to Jonathan Fry who was born in 1969.
