Introduction
Whether you're new to the world of wikis or have previous experience this quick tutorial, in conjunction with other help resources available on this site will get you off to a flying start.
If you need more help or have questions then pop along to our wiki support forum and submit a question.
Search First
As the content of this wiki grows it's increasingly important to search first for what you're looking for. You can either use the search box in the left hand column or use the advanced search functionality.
If the content doesn't already exist you'll be advised by the search system and given the opportunity to create it yourself.
If you're in a position to do so please help other researchers and create the content yourself. Chances are if you're looking for something specific then others will be too.
If you're not able to add the content yourself we would still like to see it available on this wiki. Please visit our Wanted Content page and add a new request to the list. Other users of this wiki will then be able to discuss your request on the Wanted Content Discussion Page which will ensure the most important content gets added first.
Adding New Content
As a security measure to safeguard this wiki and its content you need to be both logged in to this wiki and have your email address verified before you can add new content.
Before you can login you need to register for a new account which is a very quick, easy and secure procedure which takes less than one minute.
Once you've registered and logged in you need to visit your personal preferences page and enter a valid email address. As soon as you have done this the wiki will automatically send you an email which contains a web link. Follow the instructions in the email and click on the link or copy it into your browser's address bar to verify your email address. (If you can't see the email in your inbox within five minutes please check your spam / junk email folder as it may have been incorrectly tagged as spam.)
Assuming you're now registered and logged in you can now search for and create your own content. Referring to our Editing help and general help sections will make your life easier if you're new to wiki markup. A very useful article can be found on the Wikipedia wiki.
See the Best Practice section below to help us maintain a consistent format.
Editing Existing Content
As a security measure to safeguard this wiki and its content you need to be both logged in to this wiki and have your email address verified before you can edit existing content.
Following the conventions detailed in Adding New Content above, search for the content you wish to edit if you haven't already located it then click on the edit link in the top menu.
Some pages are protected by the wiki's administrators and moderators to prevent vandalism (Like this one). These are clearly identified as the edit link is replaced with the word Protected. If you wish to edit a protected page or would like to make a suggestion relating to it you can comment the page in its discussion section, contact an administrator or post a message in the Wiki's forum.
See the Best Practice section below to help us maintain a consistent format.
Best Practice
The Fry Family Genealogy Wiki is a collaborative effort which in itself creates problems trying to ensure consistent formatting and styles. Following these guidelines will help everybody and will reduce the need for others to edit your work.
Categories
Every page in this wiki can be categorised very easily. Once a category has been applied to a page, relevant content is automatically grouped together by the wiki software making it far easier for users to locate other similar content.
To categorise a page, add the following code to the bottom of your content:

You can also apply multiple categories to a page although we ask that you don't add more categories than are strictly necessary.

Categories are then displayed at the bottom of each page. You can click on the link to see other relevant content. An example of this can be seen at the bottom of this page or here. You can also view all categories in this wiki by visiting the categories page.
Discussion
You are free to add whatever content you feel will benefit the community, whenever and as often as you like. When it comes to editing existing content we ask that you follow the following guidelines.

Image Size
You can upload images for use with your content by first visiting the upload page.
Please limit images to no larger than 800 pixels X 800 pixels. This helps to ensure we have adequate space for everybody's images and reduces loading times for those users not on a fast internet connection.
To embed your images into a page use the following code:
